June Studio News

Hi Dancers!

Welcome to Winter! I always start by writing “just a quick Studio News” and then write A LOT of words. Either way, please read on to hear what’s happening at 6th Position.

Northbourne Updates

Waiting Room

If you didn’t already know: After a lot of sweat, a little of my blood and a few tears from Billy, Northbourne Studio’s balcony has been transformed! Just kidding on the tears, sort of.

Feel free to come inside the studio now before your class and use the waiting room to change your shoes, sit and chat quietly or start warming up. Because this space has no separate heating or cooling of it’s own we have removed the doors to access the studio’s AC, so please try to keep your conversations quiet.

Parking

The parking situation at Northbourne has improved slightly too. Theatre Lane Carpark is now free after 5:30pm on Wednesday to Sundays. I know this isn’t helpful for our Monday and Tuesday night classes, this change of rules seemed to address more of hospitality businesses in the area but a win is a win.

Security

London Circuit’s safety is also being improved with more cameras out on the streets. Further to the outdoor security, Billy and I also installed a camera at the Northbourne Studio when we were creating the waiting room. All of these measures alongside the coded street door will hopefully lead to student’s feeling safer at the city studio. A reminder to make sure the street door has shut properly behind you as that is how it re-locks itself.

Pride Month!

Happy 1st of June everyone! This means Pride Month has commenced and we have some ally-friendly workshops and themed classes coming up:

2nd June - Rainbow Scarf Dance at Mitchell

Tomorrow night I’ll be teaching a national character scarf dance with rainbow scarves and ribbons. So if you love ballet and sending support to the LGBTQI+ community, please come along! Class starts at 6:15pm at the Mitchell Studio and I will film the dance at the end (appearing in the video is totally optional of course). Wear your brightest leotards!

6th to 27th - June Pride Party Project at Northbourne

Our lovely Maddi has planned 6P’s first video project! Celebrating social and self-acceptance as well a body confidence, this four week course will collaborate with both our Hip Hop & Heels classes on Friday nights!

The cost is $120 for each course but if you’d like to do both, we can offer you a discount - just send us an email! Please note that this is an enrolment course and casual passes will not be available to use. This is to ensure Maddi can plan the video accordingly and make sure that everyone knows all the choreography. A professional videographer will come in during the final week and film the project so you can have the full music clip experience!

15th June - Commercial Dance at Northbourne

Cue the lights and turn up the volume - we’re dancing like icons! Emily’s commercial class is your backstage pass to a feel-good, full-out celebration of identity, movement, and music. Expect pop anthems, music video-inspired choreography, and that extra sparkle that only Pride (and Emily herself) can bring!

Wear what makes you feel bold. All levels welcome. All identities celebrated.

21st June - Rainbow Rodeo at Mitchell
Our FABULOUS Chloe is bringing you… wait for it…. Line Dancing!!! Whether you’re a seasoned dancer or stepping into our studio for the first time this is a welcoming, beginner-friendly space to move, laugh and celebrate queerness! For our Rainbow Rodeo the cowboy boots or even your tap shoes are optional, but the good vibes are mandatory!

6P Teachers

We have recently said goodbye to a few friendly faces at our studio and I wanted to thank them for their service. As you all know, the 6P staff are a rare breed of dance teacher. Ultra-supportive and inclusive, these teachers love what they do and we will miss them! Fondest farewells to:

  • Fabulous Nicole - being replaced by Emily on Thursday night Tap Classes and Noah on Tuesday night Tap Classes.

  • Ballet Fit is no longer on the schedule but you can see Emory be the SCARIEST Mouse King in Nutcracker and Gino at Beginner Ballet on a Saturday morning.

  • Siobhan is leaving to focus on her legal work and study - she is being replaced on Saturday mornings by a rotation of Gino, Imogen and Jess. Siobhan will still be around at the studio as a student and relief teacher!

  • Tatiana’s not leaving! Nobody panic! But her private lesson time slots on Tuesday afternoons have increased in popularity so she will remain at the Mitchell Studio on Tuesday nights for Int./Advanced Ballet & Pointe. This will be in effect from 10th June. Astrid and I will rotate the Elementary Ballet & Pointe at the Northbourne Studio with Astrid taking on a longer session while I get through the Nutcracker coma! I’m really looking forward to seeing Elementary Ballet again - I’ve missed you all!

6P Merchandise!

Want to support a local business and wear your love for dance? New 6P merchandise is coming soon - just in time for winter! Billy and I have been testing a few different companies to ensure quality products. Soon we will have available for purchase:

  • More of our toasty warm hoodies

  • The highly requested raglan-sleeve shirt!

  • Zip-up hoodies so stage hair and make-up doesn’t get ruined at the concerts but keeps you warm between numbers!

  • 6P travel mugs in case you need a cup of tea at ballet as badly as I always do.

  • If there are other pieces you’d like such as dance gumbies, or singlets, let us know!

These products will be available on our website soon and can be shipped directly to your house. Keep an eye out for the release date on our socials!

Nutcracker Tickets

Come support your dance besties in this year’s fabulous production! Tickets are selling fast so decide on a Friday night or weekend matinee and make an outing of it! We have two new numbers, a swan sleigh, MORE fake snow and two casts of principal dancers. I’ve said it once, I’ll say it again, these are the hardest working adults in Canberra! The amount of time and energy they have put into this production is crazy. You can purchase a ticket here.

We are still looking for a narrator and now an Auslan interpreter for our sensory-friendly show if anyone is interested! Please email me.

Noah The Enviro-Warrior

You may have noticed a blue recycling box in the cubbies of Studio 1 at Mitchell. Our lovely Noah is passionate about saving our planet and is helping us all to do our bit. You can place hard to recycle items in this box and Noah will deal with them for you! Items like plastic or metal lids, easter egg wrappers, batteries, broken tools and even bobby pins! I know there’s always a few of those floating around the studios… A more extensive list is on the front of the box.

Noah is keen to also implement a composter once we have some outdoor trees and flowers. If anyone has any other ideas for being an environmentally-friendly dance studio, let us know!

Have a safe and peaceful long weekend,

Anouska.
