Nutcracker 2026 Audition Info

Saturday 31 January & Sunday 1 February
Auditions are open to any Canberra adult ballet dancer (16+ as per our classes) as well as 6th Position’s Teen Beginner program. We are holding two different levels for auditions to make this production an inclusive and welcoming space for all ballet students, regardless of their level. Not sure which one you fit in? Come along to both!

Arrive Early

When you receive your emailed confirmation of enrolment, you will be asked to fill in the audition intake form indicating your experience, level of commitment and whether you would like to be considered for a principal role. Ensure you fill this in so that on the day you can just focus on getting ready. You arrive up to 30 minutes early and warm up in the space. This will give you the best chance to perform to your potential.

What To Expect

You will be taught a barre and centre and followed by short excerpts of the choreography which you will perform in small groups. You will be assessed on your technique, performance, attitude and ability to keep to time/formations. These sessions will be filmed for review purposes by the audition panel and some small snippets may be used for social media.

Feeling Nervous?

It may help to think of the audition more like a workshop. This can help calm your nerves. Unless we have an extremely large number of auditionees and cannot accommodate a Cast A & B for the corps de ballet, everyone will receive a place in the production because we believe Every. Body. Welcome! What we are looking for is where to place you in the class levels and any stand-outs for the principal, supporting principal, soloists or featured artist roles.

Ballet is a lifelong art form and we hope this production will provide goals for all adult students (beginners through to advanced), time and time again.

Unable to Attend?

You must notify us via email (nutcracker@6thposition.com.au) by Wednesday 28 January 2026 if you are eager to audition but unable to attend in person. In your email, please indicate your experience and reasons for absence. You will be asked to submit an audition form as well as a recent video of yourself dancing. For existing students, this can simply be your concert or Nutcracker performances. If not, can give you a list of steps to include. Audition videos received after the in-studio auditions cannot be considered as the panel meets immediately afterwards for discussion.

Audition Checklist:

  • Enrol in one or more of the audition levels.

  • Complete the audition intake form.

  • Arrive early to warm-up.

  • Pack a large water bottle (you can keep this at the barre with you).

  • Pack your ballet flats.

  • Pack your pointe shoes if you have been doing pointe work for 2+ years and wish to audition for the pointe pieces or a relevant principal role (see casting requirements).

  • You may wish to bring a sweat towel as it will probably be hot.

  • Your best performance face! A narrative ballet requires strong story-telling skills.

  • A can-do and friendly attitude. We all make mistakes, but we are looking at how you respond to these. We also uphold a strongly inclusive and friendly culture at 6th Position and diva-like behaviour will not be tolerated! This production is for Every. Body.

Chookas!

Best of luck from all of us at 6th Position, we can’t wait to see you! In the meantime, save the date for the Cast Welcome Party on Friday, 6 February 2026 at Mitchell, Studio 1 from 5:15-6:15pm.
